Curatorial statement

Julia Gryboś (1988, Opole, Poland) and Barbora Zentková (1986, Martin) graduated from the Painting Studio II of the Brno University of Technology’s Faculty of Fine Arts, where they currently attend doctoral programs. They formed an artistic duo already during their studies and even submitted a co-authored diploma thesis. Their focus shifted from painting towards creation of audiovisual environments with performative elements, combining sound with painting and other media. They often use found materials and objects with special meanings which are then completed by means of artistic intervention. The artists are interested in work with specific, often non-gallery spaces, such as abandoned buildings and stores out of business. Using sound and other elements, they build unique, even hypnotic experiences in concrete, unrepeatable points of spacetime – simply put, here and now. Their combination of sound and image is similar to the way music is used in cinematography – the sound element amplifies and gives emotional coloring to the visual experience. Thematically, the artists focus on various phenomena in the context of late capitalism, such as sleep, tiredness related to the constantly increasing pressure on an individual to perform, etc. Gryboś and Zentková currently live and work in Berlin. They won the Oskár Čepan Award in 2016, the winning installation was presented at the exhibition in the Central Slovakian Gallery in Banská Bystrica. Other finalists were Juraj Gábor, Daniela Krajčová and Lucia Luptáková.
